If your company manufactures, trades in, stores or transports feed ingredients of plant origin and plans to enter EU markets, it is worth knowing about the EFISC-GTP standard and how it can simplify access to European markets.
What is EFISC-GTP
EFISC-GTP (European Feed & Food Ingredients Safety Certification — Good Trading Practice) is a pan-European certification scheme for the safety of feed and food ingredients. The standard has been developed by leading EU industry associations:
FEDIOL — the EU oil industry
Starch Europe — the EU starch industry
EBB — EU biodiesel producers
EUROMALT — the European malt industry
COCERAL — the EU grain, oilseed and feed trade
The standard confirms compliance with EU Regulation No. 183/2005 on feed hygiene and EU Regulation No. 852/2004 on food hygiene and is based on a risk-based approach: HACCP, supplier control, traceability, laboratory testing in ISO 17025-accredited laboratories.
Who is EFISC-GTP suitable for?
The standard covers companies working with feed ingredients of plant origin:
Production (Scope D):
- Processing of oilseeds and refining of vegetable oils
- Starch industry
- Production of glycerine from biodiesel
- Malt production
- Trade, storage and transport (Scope F and G):
- Trade and collection of plant-based feed ingredients
- Storage and transhipment
- Transport of feed ingredients by road, rail and sea\
Mutual recognition with other schemes
A key feature of EFISC-GTP is formal mutual recognition agreements with leading European feed certification schemes. This means that companies certified under EFISC-GTP can supply products to companies certified under these schemes without additional audits:
Scheme: GMP+
Market: Netherlands and international
Basis for recognition: GMP+ TS 1.2 Purchase
Scheme: QS
Market: Germany
Basis for recognition: QS Annex 9.1
Scheme: OVOCOM (FCA)
Market: Belgium
Basis for recognition: BT-02 Purchase General provisions
Scheme: AIC / UFAS
Market: United Kingdom
Basis for recognition: AIC Recognised Assurance Schemes
Scheme: CSA-GTP
Market: France
Basis for recognition: CSA-GTP standard Appendix 6
Mutual recognition has been in effect since 1 May 2014 and is regularly updated. The latest version of the agreements is dated February 2026.
Practical implications of mutual recognition
A company certified under EFISC-GTP may, without additional verification:
- Supply oils, meal, starch, glycerine and malt to GMP+ certified compound feed manufacturers
- Supply feed materials to companies within the QS system (Germany) following registration in the QS database
- Supply products to OVOCOM certified companies in Belgium
- Supply to companies within the AIC system in the UK
Furthermore, EFISC-GTP itself recognises the results of audits conducted under FSSC 22000, BRCGS, ISO 22000:2018 and IFS — allowing these to be taken into account during a combined audit.
How to obtain EFISC-GTP certification
Certification is carried out by the accredited body GIC (Guard Is Certifications) — an international certification body headquartered in Nuremberg, Germany.
The process includes:
- Application submission — description of activities and definition of the scope of certification
- Audit — verification of the safety management system at the facility
- Certificate issuance — annual confirmation of compliance
- Surveillance audits — regular checks to maintain the certificate
How much does certification actually cost?
The cost of maintaining certification depends not only on the cost of the audit, but also on the requirements for laboratory control and the frequency of analyses. For oil extraction plants, and producers of meal, starch and molasses, these costs can vary significantly depending on the chosen certification scheme.
